Putting a pool inside a cabin: what the building has to do

Every indoor pool that fails does so in the same order. The water is fine. The room is what gives way.

The short answer

An indoor pool needs four things the rest of the building does not: a slab and footings designed for the water load and the excavation next to them, a continuous vapour barrier on the warm side of every wall and ceiling assembly, mechanical ventilation and dehumidification sized to the water surface area, and drainage that assumes the floor will be wet. Build the shell and the enclosure as one system, or the room will rot from the inside while the pool itself stays perfect.

The room is a humidity chamber, and it is on all winter

An uncovered pool surface evaporates continuously. Outdoors that water leaves. Indoors it goes into the air, hits the first cold surface it finds, and condenses inside the wall or ceiling assembly where nobody sees it for a few years.

This is why an indoor pool room is not a normal room with a pool in it. The vapour barrier has to be continuous and on the warm side, penetrations have to be sealed rather than stuffed, and the assembly has to be able to dry in a direction. In a mountain cabin, where the outside is well below the dew point of that room for months, getting this wrong is not a slow problem.

Dehumidification is the mechanical system, not an accessory

The equipment that keeps the room habitable is sized off the water surface area, the water temperature and the air temperature you intend to hold. A dedicated pool dehumidifier — not a residential unit, not the house HVAC — is the normal answer, and many recover the heat it removes back into the water rather than throwing it outside.

Plan its location, its power, its condensate drain and its service access at the same time as the pool shell. Retrofitting the mechanical room into a finished building is the expensive version of this conversation.

  • Air held a few degrees above the water temperature — reduces evaporation and keeps the room comfortable
  • A cover for the hours nobody is swimming — the single largest reduction in both evaporation and heating load
  • Service access designed in, because this equipment runs continuously and will need attention

Structure, and what sits next to what

A gunite shell inside a building means excavating beside foundations that are already carrying a house. That is an engineering question about surcharge and bearing, answered before design rather than during excavation, and it is the reason indoor pools are far easier to build into a new structure than to add under an existing one.

The slab around the pool carries wet foot traffic and equipment loads, and it needs to fall to drains rather than to a doorway. Deck drainage inside a building is a detail worth more attention than it usually gets — there is nowhere for a mistake to go.

Finishes have a shorter list indoors

Chlorinated humid air is hard on metal, on untreated timber and on ordinary fasteners. Fixings, light housings, door hardware, ductwork and any exposed steel want to be specified for the environment, and timber that is a natural choice everywhere else in a mountain cabin needs a deliberate decision here.

Surfaces underfoot are the other constraint. Indoors, the deck is wet more of the time and drains more slowly than an outdoor one, so slip resistance matters more than it does around an open-air pool.

Where the mountain part actually bites

Two things are specific to building this here. Getting equipment to a sloped cabin site is harder when the pool is inside a structure, because the excavation and the gunite hose have to reach a footprint that is partly enclosed — sequencing matters and it usually means the shell goes in before the building closes up.

And the winter case is the one to design for. A room that is comfortable in July and condensing in January has been sized for the wrong season.

Common questions

Can an indoor pool be added to an existing cabin?
Sometimes, but it is a different project from building one into a new structure. Excavating beside foundations that are already loaded is an engineering question rather than a construction one, and the enclosure has to be built to a standard the rest of the cabin probably was not. Adding a new wing designed for the pool is more often the workable route than converting an existing room.
Why does an indoor pool need special ventilation?
Because the water evaporates continuously and, indoors, that moisture has nowhere to go. Without dehumidification sized to the water surface, it condenses inside wall and ceiling assemblies and damages them from within. The pool stays fine; the building does not. It is the single most common failure in indoor pool rooms.
Is an indoor pool warmer to run than an outdoor one?
It holds heat far better, because it is out of the wind and under a roof, and it can be used year round. It also runs a dehumidification system continuously that an outdoor pool does not have. A cover over the water when the room is empty is the largest single lever on both heating and humidity.
