
What actually happens, week by week, when a pool is built
Pool construction looks chaotic from the outside and is actually a fixed order of operations. Knowing the order makes the quiet weeks much less alarming.
A gunite pool follows the same sequence every time: layout, excavation, steel and plumbing, gunite, cure, tile and coping, decking, equipment set, plaster, then fill and start-up. Most of the visible work happens in bursts with waiting in between — the gunite cure alone is about a month, and it cannot be shortened.
Before anything visible happens
Design, engineering where the site calls for it, permitting and scheduling generally take about a month, and nothing is happening in your back garden during it. This is the phase where rock, access and retaining questions get resolved on paper, and time spent here is what keeps the build from stopping later.
Layout and excavation
The shape is marked on the ground and, on most sites, that is the first time the pool feels real. Excavation follows — typically a few days, longer if rock appears. The hole is considerably larger than the pool, and the spoil has to leave the property: soil swells roughly thirty percent between the ground and the truck bed, so the volume trucked away is always more than people expect.
Steel and plumbing
The reinforcing cage is tied to the excavated shape and the plumbing is run — main drains, returns, skimmers, and any spa or water feature lines. Everything that will be buried behind concrete happens now, which is why change requests get expensive after this point rather than before it. This stage is also inspected before it can be covered.
Gunite, and then the wait
Gunite is sprayed in a single day for most residential pools, and the shape goes from a wire outline to something recognisable in hours. Then comes the longest quiet stretch of the project: the shell cures for roughly twenty-eight days, and during that time it needs to be kept wet.
That watering is not optional. Concrete gains strength through hydration, not by drying out, and a shell allowed to dry too fast on the surface ends up weaker and more prone to shrinkage cracking. If your builder asks you to hose the shell down daily, they are asking because it matters.
Tile, coping, decking
Waterline tile and coping go on, then the deck is formed and poured or set. Decking is usually the largest single area of hardscape on the project and often the longest of the finishing stages, particularly if it is natural stone or travertine set by hand rather than poured.
Equipment, plaster, fill and start-up
The pad is set and plumbed — pump, filter, heater if specified, sanitiser and automation. Plaster or the aggregate interior goes on last, because it is the finish that everything else would damage.
Then the pool is filled, and it must be filled continuously without stopping, or a ring will set at the waterline where the fill paused. Start-up follows: brushing daily for the first week or two while the new surface cures under water, and careful chemistry through the first month. New plaster is chemically active and this early period does more to determine how the surface looks in ten years than anything afterwards.

- How long does it take to build a gunite pool?
- Typically three to five months from the first design conversation to swimming. About a month of that is design, permitting and scheduling before anything happens on site, and the gunite shell needs roughly twenty-eight days to cure in the middle of the build. Weather is the main variable in East Tennessee — gunite and plaster both need workable conditions, and a wet spring can add weeks.
- Why does a new pool have to be filled without stopping?
- Because a pause leaves a permanent ring. Fresh plaster is chemically active and reacts at the water surface, so wherever the fill stops for any length of time a visible line sets into the finish that will not brush or scrub out. Once the fill starts it should run continuously until the water reaches the middle of the waterline tile.
- Why do you have to keep a new gunite shell wet?
- Concrete gains its strength by hydrating, not by drying, so the cure needs water rather than air. A shell that dries too quickly at the surface cures weaker and is more likely to develop shrinkage cracking. Daily watering through the roughly four-week cure is genuinely part of building the pool, not a precaution.
