
Building a pool on a sloped lot
A slope is not a problem to be flattened. Handled properly it is the reason the finished pool looks like it belongs where it is.
A pool on a slope needs three things a flat-lot pool does not: structure to hold the level plane it sits in, a drainage plan that routes water around the whole assembly, and an access strategy for equipment. Get those right and the slope becomes the view — the elevation change is what lets a pool sit above a valley instead of in a yard.
The level plane has to be held up
A pool is level by definition. On sloped ground that means either cutting into the hill, building the low side up, or both — and whatever holds the low side is structural, not decorative. Segmental retaining walls, poured concrete, or the pool wall itself doing double duty are all legitimate answers, and which one is right depends on the height, the soil and what sits above and below.
The rule worth knowing: retaining walls fail from water, not from weight. A wall built without drainage behind it is holding back saturated soil, which is far heavier than drained soil and pushes with hydrostatic pressure the wall was never designed for. Every wall we build gets drainage stone and a pipe outlet behind it, because that is the part that decides whether it is standing in twenty years.
Water is coming down the hill regardless
On a slope, everything uphill of the pool drains toward it. That includes the roof, the driveway, the neighbouring grade and the hillside itself. A pool deck set into a slope without an interception plan becomes the place all of that water collects.
The usual answer is to catch it above the pool and take it around: a swale or French drain across the uphill side, deck drains at the low points of the hardscape, and a discharge that ends somewhere sensible rather than at the top of the next drop. Frost matters too — East Tennessee cycles above and below freezing repeatedly through winter, and saturated soil that freezes and thaws twenty times a season will move anything not drained.
Use the elevation rather than fighting it
The best mountain pools we build lean into the grade instead of erasing it. A raised spa spilling into the pool uses a change in level you already have. A vanishing edge on the downhill side works because there is somewhere for the water to fall away to. Tiered decking gives you separate spaces — dining above, water below — that a flat lot has to invent.

Access decides the schedule
Steep sites limit what can reach the work. Smaller equipment means more passes and a longer excavation. A long gunite hose run has practical limits. Concrete trucks need a route they can take loaded and reverse out of. None of this is unusual here, but it should be planned rather than discovered — on a tight mountain site, sequencing is most of the schedule.
