Choosing pool decking: travertine, pavers or concrete

Decking is usually the largest surface on the whole project and the one people touch with bare feet. It deserves more thought than it usually gets.

The short answer

Travertine stays coolest underfoot and handles freeze-thaw well because it is porous, but it needs sealing and is the softest of the three. Concrete pavers offer the widest range of colour and pattern, can be lifted and reset individually if the ground moves, and are extremely durable. Poured concrete is the most economical over a large area and the most versatile in shape, but it will crack eventually — the question is only whether the cracks are controlled.

Heat underfoot is the first test

Any surface in full July sun gets hot, but not equally. Travertine is genuinely cooler than the alternatives — it is porous and light in colour, so it absorbs less and sheds heat faster. That is why it is the default around pools in hot climates and why it is worth the premium if the deck gets unshaded afternoon sun.

Colour matters as much as material. A light-toned paver will beat a dark one by a noticeable margin, and dark broom-finished concrete is the hottest common choice.

What our winters do to each one

East Tennessee freeze-thaw cycling is hard on hardscape, and each material fails differently. Travertine's porosity, which makes it cool, also lets it absorb water — sealed and properly drained it performs well, unsealed it can spall over years. Pavers handle movement best because the joints flex and individual units can be lifted and reset. Poured concrete is the least forgiving: soil moves under it, and the slab either has control joints where you want the cracks or it makes its own where you do not.

The common factor is the base. Nearly every hardscape failure we are called to look at is a base problem — inadequate depth, poor compaction, or no drainage — rather than a material problem. A properly built base under a cheaper material outlasts a premium material laid on soil.

Practical differences that show up later

  • Travertine — coolest underfoot, elegant, needs periodic sealing, softer so it will show wear at edges and corners
  • Concrete pavers — widest colour and pattern range, individually repairable, joints need occasional sand topping, extremely durable
  • Poured concrete — most economical over large areas, any shape, seamless; will crack, so control joints and finish choice matter, and colour or stamping can be added

Slip resistance is not optional

This is a wet surface people run on. Whatever the material, it needs texture: a honed or tumbled finish on travertine, a textured paver face, or a broom or salt finish on concrete. Polished anything belongs indoors. Worth checking at the sample stage with the sample wet, not dry.

Where the deck meets the pool

Coping is the transition and it is the detail that dates a pool fastest when it is got wrong. It should relate to the deck and the house rather than matching the waterline tile, it needs a slight fall away from the pool so deck water does not run in, and the joint between coping and deck should be a flexible expansion joint rather than rigid grout — because those two surfaces move at different rates and something has to give.

What is the coolest pool decking material underfoot?

Yes, eventually — poured concrete always moves. The question is whether the cracking is controlled. Properly placed control joints give the slab predetermined lines to crack along, so the movement is planned rather than random. Pavers avoid the issue differently: the joints between units absorb movement, and individual pavers can be lifted and reset if the ground shifts.
Why do pool decks fail in East Tennessee?
Almost always the base rather than the surface material.
