Why gunite, for a mountain build

A vinyl-liner or fiberglass pool arrives as a pre-set shape, which is fine on a flat suburban lot and limiting on a mountain one. The second reason is structural. On a slope, the pool shell is often doing double duty as retaining structure, holding back the ground on the high side while it holds water on the low side. A monolithic gunite shell, engineered and reinforced, can carry that load. A shell that was moulded in a factory to sit in a level hole cannot, which is why the custom pools you see set into East Tennessee hillsides are almost always gunite.
The site decides the pool
Before a shape is chosen, the ground gets read: how equipment reaches the pool location, how far the site falls across the footprint, what the soil and rock are like, and where water moves. Access is frequently the tightest constraint, rock is the most common surprise, and a slope means retaining structure and a drainage plan become real lines in the project rather than details.

Weather is the main variable once work is visible. Gunite and plaster both need workable conditions, and an East Tennessee wet spring can add weeks no schedule can absorb. The design decisions that actually matter

Requirements are set locally, so the county or city building department and any HOA covenants belong in the plan from the start, not after the deck is poured.
The last decision is who carries the whole build.
